What can a union do about compression of faculty salaries?

A union can bargain for a fund to adjust faculty salaries for compression and
market value, just as many other faculty unions do. The SIU faculty union contract,
for example, mandates added funds every year to adjust for salary compression and
market equity. In 2010, $1.5 million will be available, an average of $2,333 for the
700 faculty members.
